Obituary for Mariah Louise Chisholm Hasker

Mariah Louise Chisholm Hasker, died one week after her husband of 62 years, William (Bill) Hasker.

She is survived by her sons, Wm. Terrell Hasker and partner Charlene Worthley of Agua Dulce, CA, and Peter R. Hasker and wife Pamela of Houston TX; her daughter Martha “Margeaux”,
Johansson and husband Per of Aspen, CO;  six granddaughters, Katherine, Rebecca, and Anna Hasker of Houston, TX and Isabella, Stella and Annika Johansson of Aspen, CO, and by her brother-in-law Richard E. Hasker of Ashland, VA.

Mariah was a graduate of St. Catherine’s School, Richmond, VA . She also earned a BA from Westhampton College, Richmond, VA and an MS in Human Development and Counseling from Vanderbilt University.

Before moving to Morristown in 1987, Bill and Mariah lived in Richmond, VA, Baltimore, MD, Houston TX and finally in London, England, where she worked as a therapist specializing in addiction. She enjoyed traveling with Bill and her family  to numerous countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America, and to visit her children, grandchildren, and friends across the U.S.

Mariah had a beautiful voice, and  loved to sing either by herself or in a group. She sang to Bill as he lay dying.  She performed for a number of years at Carnegie Hall with the Masterworks Chorus. She was also dedicated to civil rights, inspired by  growing up in the segregated South with Gladys, Susie, Nelson, an African American woman a few years older than herself, who lived with her family as a servant but whom Mariah came to regard as her sister. By the time Maria's own children arrived, Susie, who died in 2007, was a fully integrated member of the family. Mariah deepened her commitment to  civil rights for all Americans through her three decades of work with the Anti-Racism Task Force of Morristown, working for equal rights for the LGBTQ Community, her work with the homeless through her church, the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Morristown; and as a member of the Ebony and Ivory choir, and the many charities she supported.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10065, Ronald McDonald House Charities Inc., 26345 Network Place, Chicago, IL 60673 or The Church of the Redeemer, 36 South Street, Morristown, NJ 07960.
