Obituary for Naomi Lydia Smith McKay

Naomi Lydia Smith McKay was born in Orange County VA. on Oct. 29th, 1938. The youngest of 16 Brother's and Sisters. Her Parents the late Rev. William Fiescher Smith and Hattie Smith raised her and her siblings as devout Christians. She had a golden voice that could reach the heavens some would say. She enjoyed church and singing more than anything in the world. She attended George Washington Carver High School in Orange VA. While in high school she was once in JET magazine noted as the "Singing Waitress" at the restaurant where she used to work.

In the mid 50's she met her husband to be Leroy McKay from Bennetsville S.C. who passed away Feb 3rd. 1985. They had been married for 25 years prior to his death. They had three children: Leroy Johnathan McKay, David Mark Paul McKay (deceased) and William F. McKay. Leroy worked in construction as a foreman and Naomi was a homemaker who later found work as a Home Health Aide for The Visiting Nurse Association. She was extremely proud of her job caring for the ill whom she regularly sang for and brought gifts from her favorite store Epstein's. If there was a choir rehearsal, bible study, Revival or any church outing you would find Naomi testifying for her Lord & Savior. After high school, she spent some time at Hood College in Maryland where she studied Music and had a strong interest in Opera. She mixed her new interest with the fire and brimstone of the gospel hymns she sang in her father's church. Naomi aspired to be like her favorite gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. "Precious Lord" was one of her all time favorite songs that she would sing all over in churches from Virginia to New Jersey usually accompanying her brother the late Rev. James Smith.

Naomi is survived by her sons Leroy Johnathan McKay of Wharton, NJ And William McKay of Orange, NJ; 13 grandchildren a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and close personal friends from her church family at Calvary Baptist Church in Morristown NJ. Where she has been a member for over 40 years.
